Honoring RiverRenew Miners for National Miners Day

This time two years ago, Hazel, AlexRenew’s Tunnel Boring Machine (TBM), was working tirelessly 150 feet below ground. At this point Hazel had completed 70% of Alexandria’s Waterfront Tunnel. Accompanying Hazel was a team of dedicated TBM operators who successfully guided her 24/7 as she made her way from AlexRenew’s treatment plant to what is now the Pendleton Promenade and diversion facility.

As National Miners Day on December 6th approaches, we’re looking back at the accomplishments of the miners who helped create the Waterfront Tunnel, which will prevent over 120 million gallons of combined sewage (sewage mixed with rainwater) from entering the Potomac River each year. The dramatic reduction in pollution will improve aquatic habitats, reduce bacteria, and create healthier waterways for future generations.

Congress designated December 6th as National Miners Day in 2009. National Miners Day recognizes the hard work of miners across the country. December 6th is the anniversary of the deadliest mining accident in US history in 1907, when 362 miners died near Monogah, West Virginia.
