After bringing flows to the Waterfront Tunnel for the first time in April, the AlexRenew team has met several more testing milestones over the past month.

  • Crews completed tests on the Hydraulic Power Unit system, which opens and closes valves throughout the pumping station, allowing flows to pass through the entire system.
  • The team also turned on the two Tunnel Dewatering Pumps for the first time. The tunnel dewatering pumps sit at the lowest level of the pumping station and can move up to 20 million gallons of wastewater every day. They lift flows 130 feet from the bottom of the Waterfront Tunnel to AlexRenew’s treatment plant.
  • After testing the tunnel dewatering pumps, crews successfully tested the wet weather pumps. These pumps are the biggest of their kind, and will provide extra capacity during large storms.
  • Most recently, divers with specialized equipment are cutting in to the Commonwealth Interceptor, connecting the Interceptor with the rest of the pumping station.
