On rainy days, millions of gallons of combined sewage have historically polluted the Potomac River from an outfall located at the end of Pendleton Street. To protect the river, AlexRenew is constructing a diversion facility that will reduce the number of these pollution events by capturing and transporting combined sewage into the Waterfront Tunnel.

After four years of work, the RiverRenew team is opening the Pendleton Street Promenade to the public while they finish construction to bring the completed diversion facility online.
