Article Intro Text
On Monday, October 7, Virginia American Water (VAW), the water utility for Alexandria, announced it was aware of unauthorized activity on its computer network. In an effort to protect its IT systems, VAW temporarily disconnected or deactivated certain applications, including its MyWater customer portal.

AlexRenew, responsible for the management of our community’s wastewater, operates separately from VAW. However, we rely on data from VAW to generate customer bills each month. AlexRenew’s own networks, systems, and data remain unaffected and secure, but some AlexRenew customers will see billing delays this month while data from VAW is unavailable.

AlexRenew is tracking this incident closely and is in contact with VAW. VAW has not yet announced when its metering systems will be fully operational again, but the utility did note that investigations of this nature take time.

Late fees for all affected AlexRenew customers will be waived until VAW’s systems are fully operational.
