AlexRenew is a wastewater treatment authority serving Alexandria and parts of Fairfax County. Each year, our facility processes and cleans approximately 13 billion gallons of wastewater received from area homes, schools, and businesses. For more than 60 years AlexRenew has protected the community, serving as Alexandria’s resilient provider of clean waterways.

AlexRenew 1950s

Our Story

AlexRenew (formerly Alexandria Sanitation Authority) was created in 1952 to build, operate and maintain a new sewage treatment system to serve Alexandria and parts of Fairfax County, which made good engineering and financial sense. At that time, the Potomac River was choked with raw sewage, which posed a severe health threat to the community. We haven’t stopped protecting our community’s health and the environment since our first day of plant operation in July 1956.

Each year, our facility processes and cleans approximately 13 billion gallons of wastewater received from area homes, schools, and businesses. Our mission is to protect the community as Alexandria’s resilient provider of clean waterways.

AlexRenew Environmental Center

Board of Directors

AlexRenew is overseen by a Board of Directors - five citizens appointed by the Alexandria City Council to four-year staggered terms. Board members are responsible for the oversight of AlexRenew and its compliance with the Virginia Water and Wastewater Authorities Act and all environmental regulations.

What We Do

AlexRenew is the wastewater treatment authority for Alexandria and parts of Fairfax County. Each year, the utility processes approximately 13 billion gallons of wastewater it receives from area homes, schools, and businesses, before safely returning it to our waterways. AlexRenew also oversees RiverRenew, the largest infrastructure project in Alexandria’s history. The project will prevent millions of gallons of combined sewage from polluting our rivers and streams each year.
