Event News

Even though we all need and use water every day, the urban water cycle remains a mystery for many of us. Water Discovery Day was an opportunity to deepen personal connections with our local waterways. The event shed light on where our water comes from, what happens to water after it’s used, and why clean water is vital for our community and a healthy environment. With fun ranging from boat building to water coloring to a water-themed dance class, Water Discovery Day featured a variety of activities hosted by AlexRenew and our community partners for attendees young and old.

The 2017 Ellen Pickering Environmental Excellence Award has been awarded to Katharine Dixon, President and Chief Executive Officer of Rebuilding Together Alexandria. The award was presented today during Alexandria Earth Day 2017 by Alexandria Renew Enterprises and the City of Alexandria Environmental Policy Commission.

The Potomac River is filled with historic, cultural, and natural beauty. It connects us to the Chesapeake Bay, another of the state’s most valuable natural resources. We work hard every day to protect these waterways while providing reliable and affordable utility services for our customers. Fully restoring these waterbodies will take years of steady work. That said, 2016 proved to be a landmark year, not just for AlexRenew, but also our local waterways. While we are excited about 2017, we are taking a minute and recap some of the last year’s achievements and what they mean for our community.

On September 15th, to raise awareness and educate our community about the value of water, AlexRenew participated in the national initiative, Imagine a Day Without Water. AlexRenew took part in several ways: on social media, through employee-submitted photos, and via a community YouTube Live event. September 15th was all about the value of water, and now we're recapping the fun.

AlexRenew celebrates 60 years of transforming the community’s dirty water. That is 60 years of operating 24 hours a day, 365 days of the year to protect public health and ensure that our community’s streams, rivers, and bays improve for future generations. Let’s take a look back at the early days of AlexRenew, originally Alexandria Sanitation Authority.
