Even though we all need and use water every day, the urban water cycle remains a mystery for many of us. Water Discovery Day was an opportunity to deepen personal connections with our local waterways. The event shed light on where our water comes from, what happens to water after it’s used, and why clean water is vital for our community and a healthy environment. With fun ranging from boat building to water coloring to a water-themed dance class, Water Discovery Day featured a variety of activities hosted by AlexRenew and our community partners for attendees young and old.

Today, the City of Alexandria Environmental Policy Commission and Alexandria Renew Enterprises (AlexRenew) presented the 2018 Ellen Pickering Environmental Excellence Award to Judy Noritake, a former chair of Alexandria Park and Recreation Committee and an advocate of preserving open spaces in the community. Representatives of AlexRenew, the City of Alexandria Environmental Policy Commission, and the Pickering family presented the award to Noritake at the city’s annual Earth Day event.

On September 15th, to raise awareness and educate our community about the value of water, AlexRenew participated in the national initiative, Imagine a Day Without Water. AlexRenew took part in several ways: on social media, through employee-submitted photos, and via a community YouTube Live event. September 15th was all about the value of water, and now we're recapping the fun.

AlexRenew celebrates 60 years of transforming the community’s dirty water. That is 60 years of operating 24 hours a day, 365 days of the year to protect public health and ensure that our community’s streams, rivers, and bays improve for future generations. Let’s take a look back at the early days of AlexRenew, originally Alexandria Sanitation Authority.

The Commonwealth of Virginia and the City of Alexandria issued a proclamation declaring June 30 Drinking Water and Wastewater Professionals Appreciation Day. I’m incredibly proud to work with dedicated professionals who provide a critical public service, no matter the day or hour. I hope next time you turn your faucet or send water down the drain, you’ll stop and think of the team of workers who make it possible.

The 2016 Ellen Pickering Environmental Excellence Award has been presented to St. Stephen’s & St. Agnes School (SSSAS) in Alexandria. Over the last decade, SSSAS has gone above and beyond to incorporate sustainability into its building and transportation infrastructure as well as its curriculum. We caught up with SSSAS Director of Environmental Stewardship Brian Kane to find out more about their efforts.
