Do You Know a Hero?
Do you know an Alexandria citizen who works to preserve our parks, protect our waterways, promote recycling, and uphold the highest standards of environmental stewardship? If so, read on, because you should nominate them to be a local, environmental hero. The City of Alexandria and AlexRenew are currently searching for candidates for the 2018 Ellen Pickering Environmental Excellence Award!
Each year since 2009, AlexRenew and the City of Alexandria have worked together to find environmental heroes who go the extra green mile for Alexandria. Together, the Alexandria Environmental Policy Commission and AlexRenew are calling for nominations to recognize Alexandria citizens and organizations that demonstrate a commitment to protecting the environment and work to sustain local natural resources.
A Local Legacy of Preservation
The Pickering award is named in honor of Frances Ellen Pickering's lifelong dedication to preservation and conservation in the City of Alexandria. Mrs. Pickering was a long-time City activist who first gained recognition for her lobbying efforts that ultimately helped to create the Mount Vernon Trail between Alexandria and Washington, DC, more than 31 years ago.
Local Action, Global Impact
The Ellen Pickering Environmental Excellence Award will be presented at the 2018 Alexandria Earth Day celebration held on Saturday, April 28, from 10:00am – 2:00 pm at Lenny Harris Memorial Fields at Braddock Park, 1005 Mt. Vernon Avenue. The theme of this year’s event is Global Action, Local Impact. The event will include educational exhibits, hands-on activities for children, art, and a celebration of the natural environment with a focus on local waterways to support this year’s theme.
