Governor McAuliffe celebrated the recipients’ energy efficiency achievements at Richmond reception
AlexRenew was honored last night as part of the first-ever Virginia Energy Efficiency Leadership Awards for its sustainability efforts as one of the nation’s most advanced water resource recovery facilities.
Some of AlexRenew’s energy-efficiency achievements include:
- Since 2008, AlexRenew has reduced total energy used per gallon treated by more than 15 percent.
- Its new administrative office was outfitted with 450 solar panels that power more than 40 percent of the building’s electricity needs.
- AlexRenew offsets its use of natural gas by reusing more than 92 percent of the methane gas created while cleaning dirty water.
The Virginia Energy Efficiency Council (VAEEC) honored organizations across six categories at a reception in Richmond attended by Governor Terry McAuliffe. AlexRenew was a runner-up in the residential category.
“Transforming wastewater not only takes a lot of work, but also a tremendous amount of energy,” said Karen Pallansch, CEO of AlexRenew. “Improving our energy efficiency ultimately helps us provide stable rates for our community.”
The winners showcase how energy efficiency champions across the Commonwealth are helping businesses, schools, government and homeowners save money on energy expenditures while reducing energy consumption — all while stimulating job growth and our economy.
“The winning entries are proof that energy efficiency has tremendous potential to drive economic growth, create jobs, shrink utility bills, conserve natural resources and reduce pollution,” said Chelsea Harnish, VAEEC Executive Director. Preliminary numbers from the 2016 Clean Energy Census indicate that building energy efficiency alone accounts for $1.1B in annual revenue
