Under Construction

SANUP Landscape Architect

All SANUP packages will require City site plan review and approvals including Special Use Permits, including significant site landscaping elements. In accordance to the City of Alexandria Eco- City charter and AlexRenew’s firm commitment to sustainability the site landscape improvements will enhance the natural built environment and provide additional environmental benefits including habitat reconstruction, low impact stormwater capture and reuse, and native drought resistant landscape species.

The public review portions of this permit process will be presented, in part, by the landscape architect, with CH2M HILL providing support and presentation materials. The landscape architect will also serve as a quality control reviewer of CH2M HILL landscape design submittals, participate in workshops and reviews, and assist in ensuring compliance with City and related permitting requirements.

Project Schedule: Ongoing through FY 2012

Procurement Information: Awarded to Land Design of Alexandria, VA through RFP process in October 2009

SANUP Construction Management

Construction Management is a professional service that applies effective management techniques to the planning and construction of a project from the design phase to completion. This oversight allows for cost savings by both decreasing the amount of changes during construction and negotiating lower prices when changes are necessary.  The construction management company enforces the project schedule and offers expert supervision to ensure quality control. Other benefits include troubleshooting construction issues, problem solving, and mediating disputes between AlexRenew and the contractor.

The construction management for the SANUP project spans all five construction packages and includes bid services and support, sustainability metrics tracking, and construction process impact mitigation.

Project Schedule: Ongoing through FY 2016

Procurement Information: Awarded to Jacobs Engineering of Arlington, VA through RFP process in November 2009.

SANUP Services During Construction

The practice of the industry is to engage the design engineer during the length of the construction to provide input in the bidding phase as well as needed reviews and guidance as the construction progresses. This work supplements the Construction Management Task Order and helps assure adherence to high standards of quality.

During the bid phase, the services include distributing contract documents, answering bidder questions, and preparing addenda as necessary. During construction, the services include attending construction related meetings,  conducting site visits to review progress and quality of work, providing a technical review of submittals (and recommendations on the acceptability of substituted materials), and providing design clarification and interpretation. In the final stages of construction, the services include SCADA programming, start-up assistance, staff training, preparing record drawings, and updating O&M manuals.

Project Schedule: Ongoing through FY 2016

Procurement Information: Awarded to the designer of the SANUP program, CH2MHill in November of 2009.

SANUP Package A – Supplemental Carbon Improvements

Package A provides for an increase in the capacity of the supplemental carbon storage facility giving AlexRenew the ability to store a larger variety and quantity of supplemental carbon. The work will include replacing two existing tanks methanol with two tanks larger in both diameter and height, increasing the containment structure capacity by utilizing support legs on the tanks in lieu of large concrete pads, and provide for new pumps and piping. This package also provides modifications for using the two existing Ferric Chloride tanks and two Sodium Hydroxide tanks for supplemental carbon storage and utilizes the associated pumps to feed the supplemental carbon into the BRB facilities via new piping. At the end of the project, AlexRenew will be able to evaluate the best carbon source available based on economical and environmental factors.

Project Schedule: The design of SANUP Package A was completed by CH2MHill in June 2010. Construction is underway currently and is scheduled for completion on September 2011.

Procurement Information: The design of the project was awarded to CH2MHill through the 2005 agreement. The construction was awarded by low bid to American Contracting and Environmental Services in 2010.
